Call for creative recycling

by Julie Vollenweider on June 16th, 2009

We just scored some sleek new business cards at Brain Traffic. They are totally awesome, or as I like to say, "tawes."

Here’s the thing, though …

We have a ton of old cards. And I simply cannot stomach the idea of throwing them into the recycling bin. So I’m trying to think of creative ways to use them.

I tried making a decorative fan for my desk:

I tried making a collage for my cabinet:

And I tried using one for scratch paper:

As you can see, my ideas are totally lame. Help.

  • Build a house of cards. Then knock it down! Then do it again....
  • Nicole
Grab 52, draw some hearts and diamonds. Viola...new deck-o-cards!
  • We have the same problem at Blue Flavor.... the back side of them has the Blue Flavor leaf so I am constructing wallpaper with them.
  • Craig
I just recently starting using the back sides of old business cards to rough out slide presentations. Really easy to shuffle/add/remove...and if you can't get the message across in the space allotted then it probably won't work as a slide either.
  • Eric: the only other business plans I can think of that could use "Brain Traffic" cards probably shouldn't be given any encouragement...
  • I use mine for bookmarks. Never seem to have enough bookmarks.
  • Eric
Donate them to a needy, similarly named & branded company?

Host an alleycat (bike race), and hand them out as spoke cards for the participants.

Or, simply clothespin one to your bike's forks so it hits the spokes and makes that cool motorcycle sound.

These ideas are brills. Can't wait to wrangle the BT troops and create an army of tiny business card people. Thank you -- and keep 'em coming!
  • I like the collage.
What if you cut through it a third of the way, on both the top and the bottom, between the brain and the "BRAIN TRAFFIC" text, and then folded the texty half into a cylinder? You could make a whole society of little brainy persons, and then build little card houses for them...
  • Bookmarks! Now you can have 200 books on the go at one time!

But seriously (well, not really *seriously*), business card cubes: http://nedbatchelder.com/text/cardcube.html
  • Chris
Shred and make a nice comfy bed for a child's pet hamster.
  • christine
Maybe donate them for someone else to recycle: preschools are always looking for art materials. Business cards are a nice size for little hands.

Julie... option 3 is not lame at all... just use the back of the card... like Hugh MacLeod - http://www.gapingvoid.com.
