It is always worth trying to understand all different viewpoints. What you consider a "hostile" message that does not include much information may be the (admittedly not so successful) result of a security-aware software development process where the provision of much information is clearly undesirable. In this particular case, it is important that the system does not provide to the (possibly malicious) user information regarding whether the username or the password is wrong. Trying to make my point, please consider this example: Your username is "John" and your password is "123". Would you trust a system that when entering "John" and "124" responds "Your username is correct, and the password is almost correct! Try changing the third number -- you are not far..."?

Anticipating customers' needs is so vital—you make an excellent point. If they can't successfully navigate your website, they don't feel taken care of or valued. Users may not notice all the footwork that goes behind a website, but they sure as shootin' notice when it's been poorly done.
