Betty, I agree that being young doesn't make one wise or right, which is why I didn't write, "Old, and therefore, confused."

Murdoch *is* old, and it his his age that lends itself to his archaic way of thinking. He is also confused, in that he couldn't remember what "that Google video thing" was called (YouTube).

That said, I'm sorry I offended you.

While most commentators on the Internet were writing about how epicly stupid Uncle Rupert's plan is (myself included), Mike Masnick of Techdirt did some interesting research. Masnick realized that many of News Corps' own websites “parasite” or “steal” content in the same manner as Google and Microsoft. “Old and confused” may be a cheap shot… but it might not be too far off either.

Why would a propagandist want to wall his media empire off from the rest of cyberspace?

He wants an alternative reality in cyberspace too, an echo chamber of lies, his 'reporters' unchallenged.

He, Berlusconi, and the other aging media fascists of this age are being displaced by citizen media, citizen journalism. After a nearly 100 years' reign, top-down media and political culture is on the brink. Cyberyouth will be served.

Rupert really is confused if by “public broadcasting” he means PBS and NPR, and by “commercial broadcasting” he means my local and national CBS, NBC, ABC etc. news programs. Commercial broadcasting has been “stealing” content from newspapers for years. I don't watch local TV news because (1) it's inane and (2) the “real” local stories are usually ripped off from the L.A. Times or other local papers.

The rest of what he has to say is essentially the last windy gasps of a dying empire if the rest of his organization believes as he believes.
