Sometimes, I am too scared about posting a comment: some posts just don't show the date. I always ask myself If I am replying a "yesterday" or a 6-month post.
We could take this metaphora and compare it with the "label thing". Does call me by my name add something to my consumer experience? If it's just trying to building a "trust communication" channel, just like an offline experience (when you go shopping and have a sales person attention, just to yourself), in my opinion... coff. coff. Well, fail.
It's internet. It's online. People know that online is online and offline is offline. I guess it's like the (old) "anthropomorphism discussion" (http://www.amazon.com/Interaction-Design-Beyond...)

I agree with the simplicity and straight-forward nature of Amazon's scheme. My only gripe: Once logged in, it seems odd to have to claim that I'm not myself in order to log out. I'm still me...I just don't wish to be logged in! Semantics, I know.

Timely post-- I was just wrestling with the same issue in a wireframe yesterday. Thanks!

What's nice about Amazon's invitation to log-in is that it it's not just an invite, but touts the benefits of logging-in (all in one simple statement: "Sign-in to get personalized recommendations."
